Does anyone else think that this is one of the best ideas ever?
;lk;

Someone decided to divide a part of Fifth Avenue into two lanes. Too bad it wasn’t the part of Fifth Avenue I walk up and down every day.

This is great! I think every city should do this. =) Maybe on streets, too, not just sidewalks.

  2. Raul said, on May 21, 2010 at 10:24 am

LOL…That’s hilarious!! They could use something like that anywhere.

I don’t live in New York and I think it’s a great idea! They should start doing that all over the city!

  4. misplacedperson said, on May 21, 2010 at 11:52 am

I might do this in our local supermarket during August.

  5. jester1ne said, on May 21, 2010 at 12:33 pm

Thats hilarious. lol Whoever did this is a genius.

  6. Pie said, on May 21, 2010 at 1:39 pm

We could do with something like this in Oxford Street, London.

  7. Veronica Twizzler said, on May 21, 2010 at 2:23 pm

LOL. But I like it! It would be funny to see how many people take it seriously. Though, I doubt hardly anyone would considering New Yorkers J-walk like no man’s business.

There should be one is ever city.

We could TOTALLY use that for DC…the tourists are beyond moronic..well..most of them.

  13. GraceKay said, on May 21, 2010 at 4:23 pm

Funny, it definitely would help the fast pace become faster. :)

  14. NiceArtLife said, on May 21, 2010 at 4:33 pm

This is very funny, like a slow lane and a speed lane (for New Yorkers) ;-)

  15. cherrow414 said, on May 21, 2010 at 4:38 pm

I want Chicago to start doing this. It would help me get to work/play/sleep etc without shoving tourists into traffic.

  16. clairela said, on May 21, 2010 at 5:00 pm

HAHAHAHA! I wish this was around when I lived there! lol! Ducking and weaving in between slow tourists was like playing a game of Frogger….

    How about “Texters” and “Non-texters?”

  18. Rachel said, on May 21, 2010 at 5:35 pm

I dont live in New York, but I do live in a tourist town, and I think this is f-ing rude. It is bad when people can’t even share a damn sidewalk. New York maybe wonderful and people there are one of a kind, but really???? Maybe New Yorkers need to be reminded that if you didnt have any dammed tourists, a lot of business would die off. Just for that, when I visit New York, I will stand on a damn busy street like an tourist and take pictures and be a pain in the a**.

      Fight for your rights!

    • 23 said, on May 22, 2010 at 10:04 am

Rachel: I was sifting through the comments hoping to find a comment that was different from all the other comments and was glad to read yours. Although I find it funny and creative and perhaps true in a satirical fashion, it is yeah, rather senseless.

In fact, I think NY might attract more curious tourists hogging up the streets if people start doing more of these :P

    • pbandchutney said, on May 22, 2010 at 8:16 pm

Rachel!!! You f-ing read my mind! I blogged about this same thing and I was totally against it! Our economy thrives from tourism. I stated in my blog that we had over 45 MILLION tourists in 2009. It’s New York F-in City for crying out loud. Who DOESN’T want to visit this awesome city?!

  25. Danny Bay said, on May 21, 2010 at 7:46 pm

Classic! When I lived in Manhattan, I used to think of the tourists as penguins, always waddling around slowly, looking up, down and all around with their cameras.

  26. Fernando Pacheco said, on May 21, 2010 at 8:54 pm

If there was one here in Waikiki, the tourist lane would be majority of the walkway. Leaving one sliver of the path for “Hawaiians.”

  33. dressingmyself said, on May 22, 2010 at 4:38 am

  42. Imaginarium of Pau said, on May 22, 2010 at 10:32 am

I find it funny because how can anyone differentiate tourists from New Yorkers? I bet no one will take this seriously. :D

  43. Emily Spada said, on May 22, 2010 at 11:46 am

This is especially important on St. Patrick’s Day. No one knows how things run around here…

  44. michaela said, on May 22, 2010 at 11:47 am

Sadly New Yorkers never seem to leave town. And if they do, they walk fast, never look at anything or anyone and absolutely never take the time to appreciate the fantastic place they’re visiting?

  45. Dante said, on May 22, 2010 at 12:14 pm

Very amusing and a very good idea in theory.

Haha, nice. Florida’s roads need this. A Floridian lane and a snow bird lane that has a reduced speed. They go 25 mph in a 50 anyways.

  50. anwa said, on May 22, 2010 at 6:02 pm

Does anyone really like tourists? I remember once I was taking pictures of my friend, who was visiting me, and another Montrealer came up and asked me (albeit kindly) if I was a tourist. I tried not to seem too offended as I disagreed.

  53. jefranzcisco said, on May 22, 2010 at 10:38 pm

Haha, thats soo kick ass…but hey do you count as a Tourist if you’ve moved to NYC, because I think if you survived a month there without getting, robbed, evicted or turned into a prostitute, you should at least be allowed to walk with the natives…

  54. Abby said, on May 23, 2010 at 12:22 am

I know tourists coming here are good for the economy but still, it is way too hard to walk on the same sidewalk as them.

Makes me not want to visit New York… I’ll be a separate-but-equal tourist who contributes to their huge tourist industry…

  75. latefruit said, on May 23, 2010 at 11:57 pm

I go along with daynemercy. We’re all tourists. We can learn from tourists–to look up and see how the buildings scan the sky, to look around us at the remarkable diversity of people and catch a few words from the ones who talk to themselves, and the others who talk on their cell phones. Tourists frequently know more about the monuments in the city than the person living there. They see everything with fresh eyes. I say bravo, tourists. We should all be so lucky as to be tourists wherever and everywhere.
